Puddingstone Bass

Late Spring early summer Bass these bass where caught a couple of weeks ago from shore one bass was caught on a fly lined Senko (firest photo) and the other bass was caught on a small 3 inch swim bait with a chartreuse dipped tail (second photo). Both fish bit shallow  2 to 4 feet of water. The swim bait fish had a buddy with it The swim bait was cast out and fished slow enough to bounce of the rocks. You could see small bait fish on the surface.

Rob's Seccombe bass

I was fishing Seccombe Lake in San Bernardino I saw a few bass but caught nothing. I met Rob and his family he was walking the lake and fishing he threw out a small dark colored Phoenix worm and caught this nice LMB.

Panfish at the Pudd.

I went out in my float tube at about 11 o'clock and stayed out for about three hours.

I went fishing for some Bluegill and Crappie for my mother in law in she was visiting. She gets mad at me because I release my bass, so I thought that I would bring her some fish home. To increase my odds I purchased some bait waxworms, crickets and a some Gulp Minnows. I rigged up a couple of poles a drop shot with two hooks and 4lb test. and a rod with a Trout Magnet jig head. I also had another pole with a 1/16oz ball head.

With the drop shot I rigged a waxworm on one hook and a Gulp 1 inch minnow on the other hook about 3-4 inches apart with 1/8oz bell sinker. I caught several Crappie and bluegill on this set up. On one cast I even got a double hook up one crappie and one bluegill. The bluegill bit the waxworm well the crappie bit the Gulp. i continued to catch fish on this set up.

I also caught a lot of crappie on my Trout Magnet jig head and 1 inch Gulp Minnow. I would cast out and work it back with a erratic retrieve (stop jerk and continue) I did get one bluegill but most of the fish on this rig where crappie. This was the first time that I used the Gulp Minnow. I also caught three trout on this set up. I don't know if it made a difference but I had 1 pound mono test. I did catch a couple of bass that I released they wheer all small 10-12 inches.

I also use a round jig head and attached a cricket to it. I would cast this out and let it sink to the bottom. I caught mostly Red ear and bluegill on this technique but i did manage to catch a couple of crappie.

I took the fish home for a nice fish fry.

Float Tube Gathering in the Bay

Los Alamitos bay (LA good fishing (most of the Time) and plenty of free parking if you get there early.
The day started out bad I forgot my net and the package of lures for the contest. I'm going to have to fish anyway. Meeting up with the guys from the float tube forume (http://floattubeforum.do-talk.com/forum) was the best part hanging out with people that share the same passion as you FISHING.

It was a nice day a little overcast but not bad the air temperature was in the upper 60’s the water temp. was 59 degrees. The targeted species is the Spotted Bay Bass. I started out throwing a small 3 inch swim bait that I had luck on before, for nothing. I then switched to a drop shot gulp shrimp. I got a couple bites but nothing, I then hooked a 15 ½ inch Sand Bass it weighed 1.6 lbs. Soon after I got bit off and lost my drop shot. I retied and caught a small flat fish on the drop shot.

I tried several other bait for nada. It was about 4-5 hour day for me and I only reeled in two fish at least I beat the skunk. I remain skunkless from the tube for the new year.

2012 First Fish

My first fish of the year, a two pound LMB in 35 feet of water, from my Float Tube at Puddingstone Lake Pomona California. It was a beautiful day in the upper 70’s and the water temperature was 56 degrees. The fish came on an Aaron’s Magic 6 inch straight tail Robo Worm on a cylinder shaped sliding sinker (I pour myself) held on with a Carolina keeper with a 3 foot liter. The rig was drag across a point that metered some fish. I was out for a couple of hours and that was the only fish I caught. I lost what felt like a nice fish a little earlier in a different spot.

First 2012 Float Trip in the Salt

My first salt water float tube outing of 2012. Tom from the Float Tube Forum invited me to fish with him. I had never fished the Los Alamitos Bay before. We arrived at the harbor at about 6:30 and started getting our gear together Scott also from the forum joined us. It was cloudy and overcast but the water temperature was around 60 degrees. We fished Docks and some eel grass. It was a slow day but I did manage to catch a nice Halibut that broke my bar on the float tube. It hit a 4 inch curly tail grub rigged up on a cylinder sliding weight (that I poured myself) and a Carolina Keeper holding the weight in place with about a 3 foot liter. The Halibut was netted but it thrashed its way out it was over 20 inches but I did not get a accurate measurement. Tom caught a couple of Croakers on a Texas rigged jerk Shad. We got several bites but could not hook them. The Wind Pick up and we called it quits for the day.

Lake Perris Float tube Tourney 10-16-11

It was a great morning for a float tube tournament we had about 10 float tubers show up for the event. We launched at Bernasconi Beach it was a bit of a walk with the float tube but not too bad. The event was free and included a Bar-B-Que for members of the Free float Tube Forum. The members did charge $10 for the side pot winner take all. I was rigged up for blue gill and bass I was switching off between crickets and wax worms on my blue Gill set up (light line, split shot and a small hook). Both worked well I caught a lot of blue gills. all between 6 and 8 inches long.

I used a modified  Gary Yamamoto Hula grub in watermelon red flake (i like the shorter version) I was hopping it off the bottom for no luck it has been a lucky bait for me at Diamond Valley and Puddingstone lake. I then started throwing my drop shot rig I tried a couple of good colors that have scored for me in the pass Roboworms Aaron Magic, Brown charteuse tail, but the worm that worked for me was a pink Roboworm with a chartuse tail. I caught 4 bass on that worm I kicked my tube in around 1pm. And ate some great Bar-B-Que burgers. Headchaser from the float tube forum won the event with a LMB just short of 19 inches my big fish was 16 inches. I would like to think everyone who participated especially the gentemen that took thier time to Bar-B-Que.
The Members where a lot of fun to fish with and I cant wait to do it again.

Lake Perris Large Mouth Bass caught on a drop shot

Puddingstone Lake Mixed Bag 9/13/11

I arrived at Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park  around 7am and got the float tube in the water. it was a beautiful day and it eventually got up 100 degrees. I started tossing out a Gary Yamamoto modified Hula Grub. Water Melon red flake on a jig head. The grass was tough and all over the lake. I casted out and ripped my jig out of the grass on my second cast a Large Mouth Bass grabbed my lure and took off. I could tell it was a decent LMB by the way it pulled and in the grass it felt twice as heavy. I had 12 pound fluorocarbon  line it held up and I reeled the fish into my net, took a photo and released her for another day. I also caught several other smaller bass. And as I was dragging a small crappie jig I caught several small bass, a red ear, and a couple of crappie. I was off the water by noon. it was a good day of fishing overall.

 19 inch Puddingstone Lake bass

Diamond Valley Lake 10/9/2011

Doug was gracious enough to invite me to go fishing with him on his 21 foot Champion bass boat. We arrived at the lake just before they opened and launched the boat. WE went to a cove where we had caught fish at in the pass. I was using a modifies Yamamoto Hula Grub and doug was throwing a swim jig. We both caught a few fish before the bite got really slow. Doug switched to a drop shot. and I tossed out a wacky rig worm on a jig head we continued to points and coves catching smaller bass. Doug out fished me again and we caught about 10-12 bass for the day we left around noon.

A First at Puddingstone Lake

It was a first for me The one that got away. I have lost many fish before but not in the way that I lost a big bass at Puddingstone Lake, CA. I was catching small bass on a small modified 3 inch stick bait (Senko type bait) and top water one of my favorite techniques because I get see the bass explode on my lure. That is what happened on this late afternoon just before dark. As i was reeling the fish in and almost to the point of me liping the bass it came unbutton, so I thought after further inspection of my lure I noticed that the back hook had broken off the popper and the bass was able to swim off with my hook still in its mouth. A broken lure that is a first for me. It was a Bass Pro Shop Popper. I wonder if they would replace it?
